When the library gets in the way

A few forgotten videos are taking most of your photo storage

You keep reviewing small images, but storage barely changes. Long clips and screen recordings may be the items worth looking at first.

Your next steps

  1. Check the category first

Make sure Photos is a large part of iPhone Storage. If another app dominates, reviewing your library may not solve the warning.

  2. Inspect the largest clips

Play the beginning, middle and end. A long recording may contain an important segment after an uninteresting opening.

  3. Choose a role for each file

Keep an original for editing, export an independent archive, or make a smaller sharing copy. These are different goals.

  4. Verify before removing

Play any replacement and check its audio and quality. Creating a copy alone increases usage until you decide what to do with the original.

Keep the originalRetain the full-quality or meaningful version; review replaceable content elsewhere first.A smaller copy may not preserve edits, movement or all detail.
Remove an unwanted itemInspect it, verify any necessary independent copy and approve only the intended selection.Deletion in a synced library can affect other devices. Permanent removal ends recovery.

Where Smart Cleaner helps

Smart Cleaner surfaces large videos and offers native media workflows so you can review the items that occupy the most space.

Download on the App Store

What it does not do

It cannot promise a particular saving or make a compressed file identical in quality to the original.

Your review checklist

Tick these as you review. This list does not change your files or email, and clears when you leave or reload.

Questions you might still have

Why did compression use more space at first?

The smaller result and original can coexist. Keep enough working space and inspect the result before removing anything.

Can a browser calculator shrink a video?

No. It estimates file size from duration and bitrate; it does not encode or upload the file.
