Your next steps
Work through one event
Start with a day or place rather than the entire trip. This makes it easier to remember why a photo matters.
Pick the keeps first
Compare expressions, sharpness and framing at full size. Mark or otherwise identify the shots you want before reviewing removals.
Distinguish identical from similar
A byte-identical file and a visually similar photo are different things. Edited versions, crops and Live Photos may serve different purposes.
Review the final selection
Check every selected removal. With iCloud Photos, deleting in the library also affects synced devices; save independent copies first when needed.
Choose the right action
| Your priority | A useful approach | Before you act |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the original | Retain the full-quality or meaningful version; review replaceable content elsewhere first. | A smaller copy may not preserve edits, movement or all detail. |
| Remove an unwanted item | Inspect it, verify any necessary independent copy and approve only the intended selection. | Deletion in a synced library can affect other devices. Permanent removal ends recovery. |
Where Smart Cleaner helps
Smart Cleaner groups similar photos for your review. You remain responsible for choosing the version you want.
What it does not do
It cannot decide which expression or memory matters most, and similarity does not prove redundancy.
Your review checklist
Tick these as you review. This list does not change your files or email, and clears when you leave or reload.

Questions you might still have
Can I use the web duplicate finder?
It compares the files you select for exact byte matches. It does not scan the iPhone library or find every visually similar image.
What about an edited copy?
Keep it if the edit matters. File size alone is not a reliable way to choose the best version.
