When the storage numbers do not add up

You bought iCloud storage but your iPhone is still full

Your cloud plan has room, yet the phone keeps showing a storage warning. It feels as though the purchase did not work.

Your next steps

  1. Compare both storage screens

Check Settings → General → iPhone Storage, then your Apple Account’s iCloud storage. Identify which one is actually near its limit.

  2. Review photo settings

If you use iCloud Photos, inspect whether Optimize iPhone Storage is enabled. Make sure uploads and sync are working before assuming originals are safely available.

  3. Allow time and connectivity

Optimization is managed by the system and may need network access and time. Do not expect an immediate, predictable amount of free space.

  4. Review local-only content

Downloads and app documents may still occupy the phone. Clean those in the owning app, or review unwanted photo-library items carefully.

Keep the originalRetain the full-quality or meaningful version; review replaceable content elsewhere first.A smaller copy may not preserve edits, movement or all detail.
Remove an unwanted itemInspect it, verify any necessary independent copy and approve only the intended selection.Deletion in a synced library can affect other devices. Permanent removal ends recovery.

Where Smart Cleaner helps

Smart Cleaner helps review unwanted media in the library, which is a different choice from keeping everything and optimizing local storage.

What it does not do

It cannot expand physical capacity, control iCloud optimization or turn sync into an independent backup.

Your review checklist

Tick these as you review. This list does not change your files or email, and clears when you leave or reload.

Questions you might still have

Can I delete photos from my phone but keep them in synced iCloud Photos?

Deleting from an iCloud Photos library also affects synced devices and iCloud. Use an appropriate independent copy or optimization workflow instead.

Will upgrading iCloud always fix the warning?

Only if cloud capacity is the relevant bottleneck. It does not directly enlarge local storage.
