A publisher-written comparison
Smart Cleaner vs Apple Photos
Try Apple Photos first for duplicate merging. Consider Smart Cleaner when you want dedicated similar-photo review, PhotoSwipe, or photo and video compression.
| Task | Smart Cleaner | Apple Photos |
|---|---|---|
| Photo review | Similar-photo review and PhotoSwipe | Duplicate merging in Photos |
| Compression | Photo and video copies in the app | No equivalent dedicated compression workflow compared here |
| Offer | In-app purchases; check current limits and renewal terms | Included with iPhone; iCloud plans are separate |
Start with the built-in duplicate collection
Apple Photos can identify duplicate photos and videos and offer merging. If the Duplicates collection is missing, there may be no identified duplicates or analysis may still be pending. Similar shots are not always duplicates. Do not assume that an absent collection means your library contains no repeated-looking photos.
Where a dedicated app can help
Smart Cleaner adds task-oriented review for similar photos, screenshots and large videos, plus PhotoSwipe and compression workflows. These are different ways to inspect and prepare files, not a guarantee of better duplicate detection. Check current native-app limits and paid options before relying on a feature.
Keep sync and deletion in view
With iCloud Photos, a deletion can propagate to other devices using that library. Recently Deleted is a recovery window, not an independent backup. Before removing an original after compression, open the new copy, check its quality, and confirm any independent backup you need.
What this comparison can establish
Apple Photos is included with iPhone; iCloud storage plans are a separate consideration. Smart Cleaner includes in-app purchases. This publisher-written guide compares documented workflows, not measured detection accuracy. Our free browser duplicate finder checks only the selected files for byte-identical contents, a narrower task than visual similarity.
Good to know
Do I need a cleaner for duplicates?
Not necessarily. Try the built-in Photos Duplicates collection first.
Does the browser finder work like Apple Photos?
No. It compares the bytes of files you select; it does not analyze or merge your Photos library.
