A practical guide
How to compress videos on iPhone
Make a new smaller copy, inspect it, and only then decide what to keep. Lower bitrate or resolution can reduce size at the cost of detail; the right setting depends on the video and its purpose.
The visual guide
Make a copy, then inspect it

- Choose a target for the receiving service, allowing a size margin.
- Inspect the beginning, middle, end and audio of the exported copy.
- Keeping both versions uses additional storage; export is not automatic cleanup.

1. Decide where the video is going
An email attachment, a chat upload and a video archive have different needs. Check the receiving service’s actual limit. Keep a margin because container overhead and variable bitrate affect the final file size. The video size calculator estimates a target; it does not encode a file.
2. Understand the controls
Bitrate is data per second, so reducing it usually reduces file size for the same duration. Lower resolution can make a lower bitrate more usable. Frame rate, codec, motion and fine detail also affect quality. A resolution label alone cannot tell you the size.
3. Make and inspect a copy
Use the native app’s video compression workflow if it fits your needs. Play the beginning, middle and end of the exported copy. Look for blocky motion, unreadable text, missing audio or changes to colors. Keep the original for editing or archiving if quality matters.
4. Separate export from cleanup
Saving both versions uses additional space during the export. A successful export does not automatically reclaim the original’s size. Confirm any independent backup and iCloud Photos behavior before removing anything. Recently Deleted can also delay the visible storage change.
Good to know
Can the website compress a video?
The calculator estimates size only. The browser photo compressor handles still images, not video.
Is 1080p always a small file?
No. Duration, bitrate, codec and audio affect size; resolution alone is insufficient.
