A practical guide
Free up iPhone space without deleting photos
Start with replaceable downloads and unused apps. If you use iCloud Photos, Optimize iPhone Storage can manage local photo copies, but it needs adequate cloud storage and is not an independent backup.
The visual guide
Keep memories; review replaceable content

- Identify the full storage category before changing anything.
- Remove only downloads you can replace; distinguish offloading from deleting an app.
- Photo optimization requires iCloud capacity and time; sync is not an independent backup.

1. Identify the storage that is full
Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Note available space and the largest category. A full iCloud account is a different problem from a full phone. Buying more cloud capacity does not add physical capacity to your device.
2. Review downloads before personal media
Look inside music, streaming, podcast and file apps for offline downloads. Remove a downloaded copy only when you know it can be obtained again and you will not need it offline. Some app commands remove a download, while others delete the underlying item; read the confirmation.
3. Offload an app carefully
In iPhone Storage, offloading an unused app keeps its documents and data while removing the app itself. Deleting an app can remove its associated data. Before offloading, consider whether you will be able to reinstall it later and whether you need access without a connection.
4. Understand photo optimization
With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud and space-saving versions can remain on the device. Uploading and optimization take time and a connection; there is no immediate space guarantee. Deleting a synced photo is not a way to keep it only in iCloud. Recheck the same storage screen after changes.
Good to know
Will compressing a photo immediately free space?
No. Creating a smaller copy while keeping the original temporarily adds a file. Review your preservation and deletion decisions separately.
Can I keep all photos and still recover space?
Possibly, if replaceable downloads or unused apps occupy enough space. The amount depends on your phone; no tool can guarantee it.
