Your next steps
Confirm the affected account
Check the account signed into Gmail and its Google storage breakdown. Drive and Photos can share that quota with Gmail.
Target actual storage usage
Use Google’s storage manager or Gmail to review large unneeded messages. Save important attachments independently before deleting their messages.
Review Trash before clearing
Mail in Trash still counts toward storage. Permanent deletion removes the recovery option, so inspect the contents first.
Check delivery again
Allow time for quota updates, then test receiving mail. Ask senders to resend messages that bounced; do not assume they will arrive automatically.
Choose the right action
| Your priority | A useful approach | Before you act |
|---|---|---|
| Less future mail | Request unsubscribe from legitimate lists you no longer need. | A request is best-effort and does not remove existing messages by itself. |
| Less account storage | Review large unwanted messages and account storage using Gmail and Google’s tools. | Archive does not free capacity; review Trash before permanent deletion. |
Where Smart Cleaner helps
Smart Cleaner helps review Gmail senders and request unsubscribe for supported mailing lists, with optional trashing of sender messages when enabled.
What it does not do
It cannot increase Google storage, inspect attachment contents, manage Drive or Photos, or guarantee email delivery.
Your review checklist
Tick these as you review. This list does not change your files or email, and clears when you leave or reload.

Questions you might still have
Does freeing iPhone space fix Gmail quota?
No. Device capacity and Google account storage are separate.
Will unsubscribing free space?
It targets future mail. Existing messages and Trash need their own review.
